It was that beloved, exalted time of summer when the sunflowers began to bloom. People would travel specially to sunflower fields in search of the perfect place for photographs. Even a sudden July downpour could not overcome the human desire to unite with the sun upon the earth.

The glowing petals shimmered in the distance and appeared in the imagination as a symbol of carefree childhood, unquestioned independence, and a titanic faith in life. No wonder our ancestors believed in the benevolent power of this plant, calling it the flower of revelation.

How many words there are today, and how little revelation. If only an ordinary sunflower could tell me what I have long wished to hear. Perhaps it is worth trusting it—its mysterious darkness that contrasts so deeply with its fiery petals.

Perhaps one should stop running from one’s own darkness and instead step into it, just as all these people lose themselves in the vast field. To become small again within the womb of Mother Earth. To become her child once more. Because where there is beauty, there is love.

The flower of the sun led me to the thought that the Creator has already made all the most beautiful things in the world, and all that remains for humankind is to create their reflections.
